Basilian FAQ | Part 3
The Dobromyl Reform
How did the Jesuits reform the Basilians?
In 1882, The Jesuits re-drafted an experimental Basilian Constitution, updating the one composed by Rutsky. They also gathered a group of new recruits (novices) at the Dobromyl Monastery for training. Gradually, each monastery was invited to accept the new Rule and discipline. Those who did not were left alone, but not permitted to accept new candidates. Only the reformed Monasteries were allowed to continue, allowing the others to die-out.
What was the reaction of Ukrainian society to the Dobromyl Reform?
The Ukrainian intelligentsia was very apprehensive of their only religious order being reformed by Polish Jesuits. It was felt that the Basilians would become instruments of the Polish politique and induce the people to abandon their ancient customs.
What came-out of the Dobromyl Reform?
The Dobromyl Reform saved the Basilians from complete extinction and gave them a new spirit of discipline and missionary zeal, which spread throughout the Ukrainian Church. Without this reform, it would not have been possible for the Basilians to do any mission work overseas. The Dobromyl Reform also produced the great spiritual father of the nation- Andrei Sheptycky, who entered Dobromyl Noviciate in 1888.
Did the Dobromyl Reform change the Basilian’s Constitutions?
Yes, but not significantly. Rutsky had already used St. Ignatius’ Constitutions as a base for writing the first Basilian Constitutions. It was a change in attitude that was most significant. The reformed Basilians became less sedentary and more missionary. An important fourth vow was added, taken from the Jesuits themselves— the vow of particular respect and submission to the Roman Pontiff.
Did the Dobromyl Reform alter Basilian’s religious garb?
Very little. The most conspicuous change was the addition of a Jesuit-style sash, which wrapped thrice around the waist, symbolizing the three vows. Novices continued to wear a leather belt; the sash was worn after the first profession of vows.
The white collar does not originate from the Dobromyl reform, but was introduced by Rutsky and Saint Josaphat; it was the typical seventeenth-century style of clerical collar.
What has happened to the Order since the reform of 1882?
The Jesuit Reform came to an end in 1904, with the first General Chapter of the reformed Basilians. Father Platonidas Filas, Superior in Canada, was elected Protohegumen, Superior of the Order.
